Mike Lee on the War Against Diabetes

June 22, 2023

Sens. Mike Lee (R-UT), Ted Budd (R-NC), and Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) introduced a bill aimed at empowering patients and improving the outdated regulation of islet transplantation, a cutting-edge treatment for individuals with Type 1 Diabetes. Rep. Matt Rosendale (R-MT) introduced a companion bill in the House of Representatives. Focused on patient-centered care, this effort would move islets to a more appropriate regulatory framework.

Of the bill, Sen Lee said, “This bill holds tremendous potential for those living with this chronic condition, offering the possibility of reducing or eliminating the need for injected insulin. By redefining islets as organs rather than drugs, we aim to align the regulatory framework with the scientific advancements in the field. This will promote innovation, enhance patient access to islet transplantation, and potentially improve outcomes and quality of life for individuals with Type 1 Diabetes. It is time for Congress to act and address the regulatory mismatch that currently hinders progress in islet transplantation. By granting regulatory authority to the appropriate agencies and prohibiting the classification of islets as drugs, we can unlock the full potential of this life-changing procedure.

Thoughts on Mike Lee’s Labor on Labor DayThoughts on Mike Lee’s Labor on Labor Day

On this Labor Day we want to thank you, Senator Mike Lee, for working so hard to keep government spending down.

Even though its been said that 2/3 of the money in government spending bills is mandatory, Mike Lee does not take that final1/3 for granted. He works diligently to try to make sure that each dollar spent is either for the benefit of the people or it is not spent at all. He is a champion against wasteful spending.

It’s not just we seniors who have noticed. Over the weekend, The National Taxpayers Union awarded Senator Lee as the most “taxpayer friendly representative in congress” He received a 95% score and an “A” grade, the highest of any member of Congress.

According to their website, this is how their grading system works:

“The Taxpayer Score can range between zero and 100. We do not expect anyone to score a 100, nor has any legislator ever scored a perfect 100—without missing a single vote—in the decades-long history of the comprehensive NTU scoring system. A high score does not mean that the member of Congress was opposed to all spending or all programs. High-scoring members have indicated that they would vote for many programs if the amount of spending were lower or if the spending were offset by cuts elsewhere in the budget. Indeed, a member who still wants to increase spending on some programs can achieve a high score if he or she votes for offsetting cuts. A zero score would indicate that the member of Congress approved every spending increase and opposed every pro-taxpayer reform.”

Thank you Senator Lee, for taking such care over the taxpayer’s dollars, and we congratulate you on your recognition.

Martin Luther King DayMartin Luther King Day

Thank you Senator Lee for continuing to stand up for the rights of all Utahns.

Today, we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. day for his landmark accomplishments in Civil Rights. One of the most remarkable aspects of his accomplishments is he preached peaceful resolutions to incredibly controversial issues.

He never declared war. He never encouraged violence. He preached of a better America that gave equal rights and opportunities to its citizens of all color.

We live in a sometimes contentious time, but we can follow Dr. King’s example and disagree better. We do not have to devolve into the hateful rhetoric that sometimes permeates the world of politics.

We believe Mike Lee strives for this as he pursues his discussions in the Senate. There are times when he proposes bills that vehemently disagree with policies or viewpoints held in the Senate, but he strongly but respectfully is able to defend his position.

Thank you Senator Lee for your approach in these difficult situations.

Celebrating our Veteran’s and Those Who Have Gone Before UsCelebrating our Veteran’s and Those Who Have Gone Before Us

We are a product of those who came before us. Their lives and choices help shape who we are. Russell M Nelson said, “When our hearts turn to our ancestors, something changes inside us. We feel part of something greater than ourselves.”

Senator Mike Lee has a good pedigree. His Grandfather, Rex Lee Sr. (1905-1934), was labeled by those who knew him as an honest attorney, despite his young age. He tragically died in a hunting mishap on this day 89 years ago, November 11, 1934.

With regard to Veteran’s Day, Senator Lee said, “America owes its veterans and their families an enormous debt of gratitude for putting themselves at risk to protect our rights and freedoms.  Some have made the ultimate sacrifice to safeguard our lives, and for that, Americans will be forever grateful.” – From his website

Mike Lee’s great uncle, Warren Lambert Hussey (1896-1976) served in World War I, both in Florida and overseas in 1918-1919, before being honorably discharged from service.

As Senator Lee has said, “The family is the most basic and essential building block of American society, and strong families are the best predictor of financial, educational, and emotional success in life.” Five years after returning from the war, Hussey married his life long sweetheart, Pearl Clark, and they raised two children as he served most of his career in the US Railroad Mail Service. They remained committed to each other until his death in 1976.
