Joseph Smith’s Run for Presidency

Thank you Senator Lee for your diligent focus on the Constitution during the recent political decisions surrounding the election. Senator Lee has voiced strong concerns on his Twitter page regarding the state of Colorado Supreme Court’s decision to not allow Donald Trump on the ballot.

December 23 is the birthday of Joseph Smith, the first president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In his day, he dealt with frustrating political issues as well. With the saints facing intense persecution in Missouri, and even having an extermination order put on their lives, Joseph Smith arranged a meeting with U.S. President Martin Van Buren to address the persecution. President Van Buren told them their cause was just, but said that he could not help them or he would lose the vote of Missouri.

Frustrated, Joseph Smith wrote the five leading candidates for U.S. President in the 1844 election. Only three provided replies, but all said basically they could offer no help for the saints, even if they became President. At the urging of John Taylor and B.H. Roberts, two members of the Quorum of the 12 Apostles, Joseph entered the race as a presidential candidate.

John Taylor led the press efforts in Joseph’s campaign and told those campaigning: “Tell the people who would be the best man, and the most able statesman; who could stand uncorrupted by bribes, and uninfluenced by power, other than the power of justice, and the cause of right; tell them where they can find a man of morality, purity, and virtue; tell them where they can find a man of sterling integrity, who is governed by the principles of righteousness; a patriot and a philanthrophist, who has both the disposition and moral fortitude to administer justice, and whose delight it would be to administer to the wants of the nation; to “break of[f] every yoke and to let the oppressed go free.” Use all of your own influence, and get the brethren, in every part to use theirs also. Recollect, for President, GENERAL JOSEPH SMITH.[50]

Joseph loved the saints, the country, and the freedoms granted by the Constitution. When he was considering running he wrote the following in his journal:

“It is one of the first principles of my life, and one that I have cultivated from my childhood, having been taught it of my father, to allow everyone the liberty of conscience. I am the greatest advocate of the Constitution of the United States there is on the earth. (Joseph Smith, Journal, 15 Oct. 1843, JS Collection, Church History Library)

It was ultimately his assassination and martyrdom that would end his campaign. However, his legacy remains as he has encouraged us to seek out candidates with strong moral character and a love of freedom. That’s why we are encouraging the candidacy of Senator Mike Lee. Not only does he espouse these virtues, but he is right on the money.

Mike Lee should run for president. He’s right on the money.

Reflections on Pearl Harbor DayReflections on Pearl Harbor Day

Thank you Senator Lee for your push for government accountability concerning how they manage tax payer money, arms, and most importantly, the lives of our soldiers in recent wars.

Today is the 82nd anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. We honor the memory of those that gave the ultimate sacrifice on this day.

We also take the opportunity to reflect on our current conflicts. Senator Mike Lee has shared his views on how these conflicts are being mishandled, and as mentioned in previous posts (https://mikeleeforuspresident.com/columbus-day-updates-on-a-busy-week-for-senator-lee), has introduced the “Define the Mission Act” to increase government accountability when engaging in war.

Senator Lee does not seem anti-war. He states on his website, “Providing for the common defense is one of the federal government’s primary constitutional obligations.  Both the President and Congress have significant responsibilities in this area to set the policies that keep our country safe.”

He continues, “Broadly, we must evaluate our most pressing national security goals and put forth the appropriate resources necessary to achieve those objectives. And where we commit resources, especially with regard to putting our men and women in harm’s way, we must have a clear national security interest, a well-articulated purpose, an understanding of the potential costs involved, and a responsible plan for success.”  https://www.lee.senate.gov/national-defense

With that said, we perceive one current trend Senator Lee finds disturbing: the wasting of American resources, whether it be tax payer dollars, equipment and supplies, or American lives. He denounces this government waste, especially in “endless wars”:

“Ukraine is officially America’s new endless war.”

“The deep state’s memory is short and rose-tinted. The Biden administration employs the same rhetoric and tactics that the Bush and Obama administrations used to conduct indefinite military engagement in Afghanistan and Iraq, not to mention undeclared intervention in Libya, Syria, and beyond. With billions flowing from the U.S. to the Ukrainian government in ‘economic support,’ long-term security guarantees, and the reconstruction effort already underway, we can’t help but feel a sense of deja vu.”

“The United States is heading down the same path that mired us in Middle Eastern conflicts for over two decades, all without clearly articulating the objective or how victory is achieved.” https://www.lee.senate.gov/2023/10/ukraine-is-officially-america-s-new-forever-war-president-biden-how-does-this-end

We feel it is important to defend democracy and its ideals worldwide. However, it is also important to ensure that our own country remains strong, with sufficient resources both for its military and its people. In our opinion, Lee is simply asking for accountability, goals, and oversight when utilizing our resources in war.

Mike Lee should run for president. He’s right on the money.

Trump’s IndictmentTrump’s Indictment

Mike Lee had a strong statement regarding former President Donald J. Trump’s indictment for his handling of classified documents.

“The Biden administration’s actions can only be compared to the type of oppressive tactics routinely seen in nations such as Venezuela, Bolivia, and Nicaragua, which are absolutely alien and unacceptable in America. It is an affront to our country’s glorious 246-year legacy of independence from tyranny, for the incumbent president of the United States to leverage the machinery of justice against a political rival. Such an act of absolute disrespect echoes despotism, making it fundamentally at odds with American democratic values,” Lee’s full statement on Twitter said.

He was not alone. Outgoing Utah congressman, Rep. Chris Stewart had this to say in his statement:

“These charges are equally unprecedented and unconscionable. This is a sad day for any American who believes in the rule of law. The National Archives have confirmed that every single president since Ronald Reagan has mishandled classified materials. There are clearly two standards of justice in our nation: one for people named Biden or Clinton and one for everyone else. I stand with President Trump against this brazen weaponization of our legal system.”

Thank you Senator Lee for speaking out about an obviously unfair situation.

Mike Lee should become a candidate for president

While some candidates in Wednesday’s debate have a great track record and good experience, they are missing on some key policies that are needed by seniors. Other candidates have good policies outlined in their campaigns, but are lacking the experience it takes to navigate the difficult political landscape.

The ideal candidate is Senator Mike Lee. Not only does Senator Lee lead with the best conservative policies, but he has more than a decade of experience serving in Washington DC. He would also bring constitutional expertise to the White House, to govern the way our forefathers intended.

Mike Lee should run for president. He’s right on the money.
